Community

If there is one word that comes up frequently in the local elected world, that word is Community. It’s usually in the form of how do we build, maintain and preserve our community. After finances and public safety, it one of the critical topics a Councilmember needs to work for. But community is a tricky topic. It means many things to different people. It can be about schools, parks, volunteering, church, ethnic, general community involvement, events, grants, shopping, City identity or neighborhoods.

With the exception of parks and grants, the City Council does not have direct control of these areas. However, we can and should assist in supporting these community areas through policy, regulation and support. Councilmembers should be some of the biggest cheerleaders for our city and communities. Councilmembers need to be aware of these communities and be involved with them, and where possible, support them with policy and engagement. Actively listen to the concerns, feedback and needs of our communities and help where possible.

After the word community, the second most important word is listening. We need to listen to our communities and individuals. Listening is where learning starts. I worked for a company where the CEO’s mantra was, “Feedback is a Gift”. This is now my mantra as well.

Since I have started my campaign for office, I have been out and meeting more people. I enjoy meeting new people and hearing their stories about what they think makes Saratoga great and their suggestions for improvement we can work on together and improve.

Feel free to send me a note and share your thoughts.
